  • Vice Admiral Kevin Cosgriff on the Need for Maritime Security

In the media presentation, Vice Admiral Kevin Cosgriff of the U.S. Navy discusses the recent need for increased maritime security.

Blue Water navies have lost much popularity in recent years with operational focus on littoral warfare and close/near shore combat operations. The need, however, for maritime security in open waters has blossomed as combined maritime forces provide direct security operations. The overall trade ramifications of lack of open water security could cripple global markets given the volatility with the increase of maritime piracy. Combined forces provide an adaptable role that is capable of providing multi dimensional maritime security with multiple nations’ militaries and private trade.

The recent Somali piracy incidents highlight the need for maritime security on open shipping lanes and gulf and coastal areas. The lack of maritime security in the Persian Gulf could create an open market on piracy, and the United States is leading the effort in keeping merchant shipping safe.

Vice Admiral Kevin Cosgriff in the 5th Fleet Headquarters of the U.S. Navy sees day-to-day operations involving security forces within the Middle East. VADM Cosgriff and the 5th Fleet conduct 24/7 security and stability operations in a particularly violent area of operations. VADM Cosgriff’s 5th Fleet provide one of the largest forces in the Middle East that protects civilian ships and works closely with allied nations in a constant combined effort to safeguard billions of dollars of merchant traffic yearly.

As seen with the bombing of the USS Cole, the security to American vessels is at the forefront of security in the AO.
  • Combined Maritime Forces Counter-Piracy Briefing

In this presentation from the Offshore Patrol Vessels and Naval Security 2009 conference, Greg Prentiss discusses how counter piracy efforts are combating the growing epidemic of piracy off the coast of Africa
  • Colonel Larry James on the Psychology of Terrorism

The United States is currently engaged in a war like we’ve never seen, having more armored vehicles, tanks, aircraft—both manned and unmanned—than ever before; however, this is more than a tactical war. It’s a psychological war. We do not understand the enemy. People raised in an environment in which the United States is the enemy will continue their war even after we’ve withdrawn from Iraq and Afghanistan. And, they hope to continue to bring their war to our soil. That makes figuring out their psychological motivations much more difficult.

Every day that goes by without America being attacked by a terrorist makes us closer to the next attack.

That’s why it’s imperative to understand how and why a terrorist thinks about destroying the United States. Dr. Larry James, the former Army psychologist who went into Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay, leads the discussion in Dayton, Ohio, at the Institute of Defense Studies and Education at Wright State University. Col James has spent a considerable amount of his life trying to understand what makes a terrorist tick. In this presentation, Col. James talks of the psychology of a terrorist.
